Visiting the Arctic University of Tromsø

Published on: May 30, 2025

At the world’s northernmost university – the University of Tromsø (UiT) – a series of research activities took place between 16 and 29 May as part of the bilateral project Addressing Human–Environment Relations through Multimodal Ethnography. Several researchers are involved in this collaborative initiative.

Slovenian researchers Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ana Svetel, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sarah Lunaček (both from the Department of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana), and Manca Filak (Institute of Slovenian Ethnology, ZRC SAZU) participated in a research seminar organized by the Department of Anthropology. They also contributed to the evaluation of film projects from the PhD program in visual anthropology (Sahel on Sahel), presented by students from Mali, Cameroon, and Niger. UiT is renowned for having established one of the first master's programs in visual anthropology, originally known as Visual Cultural Studies (VCS). This program has produced a rich array of student films since its inception in 1997. In 2025, the program was redesigned and renamed the Master's program in Visual and Multimodal Anthropology. From the UiT, PhD student Carolina Némethy and Prof. Peter Ian Crawford are also involved in the bilateral collaboration, while Prof. Trond Waage, Prof. Richard Frazer and Prof. Emeritus Lisbet Holtedahl participate in parallel activities.
