Excursion of the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology

Published on: September 9, 2025

On Thursday, 4 September 2025, colleagues from the Institute of Slovenian Ethnology ZRC SAZU, under the guidance of our colleague Dr. Daša Ličen, went on an excursion to the Sečovlje Salina. We began the trip in the southern part of the saltpans, in Fontanigge. A small train took us to the Salt-making Museum, whose establishment also involved our retired colleague Dr. Mojca Ravnik.

Later, we visited the former Monfort salt warehouses, which house the collections of the Maritime Museum – Museo del mare "Sergej Mašera" Piran – Pirano. There, we were warmly welcomed by ethnologist Veronika Bjelica and acting director Uroš Hribar, who presented the building and the recently installed collections.

In the afternoon, we returned to the saltpans, this time to the northern part. We took a walk through this still-active section of the saltpans and visited the multimedia center. There we were greeted by project leader Maja Bjelica – anthropologist, philosopher, and salt-worker – of the project “A Grain of Salt, Crystallizing Coexistence: Salt-making as Experiential Environmental Wisdom.” She introduced us both to the research project and to the work of a salt-worker.
