The book looks at the architectural and cultural heritage of the village of Črnotiče from an ethnological and art historical perspective, known for its urban planning, stone architecture and two 17th century churches, focusing on their creators from the 17th to the first half of the 20th century. In addition to detailed descriptions of the two churches and their stone furnishings, the stages of their architectural history are presented on the basis of a thorough knowledge of the history of stonemasonry and comparisons with contemporary church architecture in the surrounding area, it places them in the context of the works of important master stonemasons and sculptors such as Anže Felicijan and his son Anže Younger from Rodik, Vincenc and Anže Rojina from Brezovica in Brkini and Janez Dobrila from the Karamonov family of stonemasons from Hrpelje. The descriptions of the village buildings are particularly interesting from an ethnological point of view. Numerous homesteads feature high-quality stone carvings, the most representative of which are the courtyard portals and cornerstones made by local self-taught masters. They are presented in this book for the first time with detailed biographical information and their stonemasonry and stone carving skills. The most important among them were Luka Škorja-Smučev and several generations of the Slavc family, also known as Bržani.
