FootNotes is an online collection of essays in English, envisioned as a space for research reflections. Drawing on diverse genres (textual essay, video essay, photo essay, sound essay, anthropoetry) and themes (waterways, infrastructures, migratory routes, archaeological traces, wandering tales, street steps), the collection seeks to open a space for a wide spectrum of experimental research writings, with the essay at its core.

Although initially conceived within the research project Route Biographies (ZRC SAZU), the collection extends its doors to a broad range of themes, authors, and genres. It sits in a hybrid space between science and art, with a focus on questions emerging from the humanities and social sciences.

The collection fills the gap between field notes on the one hand and the scholarly article on the other. Conventionally, writing is imagined as the last stage in the sequence reading–research–writing. Yet writing itself often enables thinking. Put differently: between to jot down (in a field notebook) and to formalize into text (a scholarly article), there lies the often-overlooked act of writing itself—as movement, as process, as a mode of thought.
