This volume ('Sequential Ethnography') examines the twenty-four volumes of the monumental work Die österreichisch-ungarische Monarchie in Wort und Bild (The Austro-Hungarian Monarchy in Word and Picture), which were published in Vienna between 1887 and 1902. Crown Prince Rudolf sought to present the culture of the various nations and ethnic groups in Austria-Hungary through this work. The first part of the book contains articles that examine political and historical issues and raise the question of production, aesthetics, and the language of the volumes. The second part presents certain aspects of the national reception of this work, which was published in German (in the Austrian part of the monarchy) and Hungarian (in the Hungarian part) in the lands that now comprise the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Poland, and other countries.
