The central theme of the symposium is the borders of isolation. Where do isolated communities end? Where do new connections begin? And what are the borders and limitations of the concept of isolation, which we have been exploring in a multi-year research project? With the symposium that addresses these questions, we are attempting to move beyond the state-of-the-art findings. In presentations and discussions, we explore what new efforts to understand people in isolated communities might look like. We want to learn how they understand, feel, and perceive their environment and things, how they perceive and accept the borders of their own isolation, how they create new values and meanings within them, how they deal with their situations, and how they imagine their future within and beyond the borders of isolation.
